5 Tips to Make Your Air Conditioning Unit Work Longer
24
May

By Angell Aire /

While it would be nice to have an air conditioner that lasts forever, appliances just aren’t made that way. The next best thing is to have an AC unit that lasts as long as possible. Here are five of the best tips to help you make sure you keep your air conditioning unit working better and longer.

Protect the AC Unit from Harm

It is essential to set your unit up correctly so that you avoid unnecessary problems that could damage it. If possible, have a professional serviceman install your portable unit for you. Try to keep it away from appliances that emit heat to help keep the unit cool.

If you are installing a central air conditioning system, you’ll need a qualified technician to do it for you anyway. Make sure your AC unit stays free of debris and out of direct sunlight. If possible, have it installed beneath an awning to keep it cool.

Schedule Bi-Annual Maintenance Checkups

It’s important to get your AC unit serviced at least twice a year to ensure all of its parts are working correctly. Ideally, you should have the unit inspected, cleaned, and repaired by a professional HVAC technician to avoid more significant issues in the future.

Promote Proper Air Flow

If the unit’s condenser gets blocked, it has to work harder to circulate the air. Take the time to keep it free of obstructions so that it can work efficiently. While you are at it, make sure that the vents throughout your home are also free of blockages.

Change the Filter

A dirty filter makes your unit work harder, weakening its performance and taking months if not years off its lifespan. Change your air filter according to the manufacturer’s suggested recommendations to help keep your air conditioning unit working efficiently.

Have the Air Ducts Inspected

While it isn’t necessary to have the air ducts inspected every year, it is important to do so at least every seven or eight years. At the time of inspection, gaps and cracks are repaired to allow optimal function. If no repairs are necessary, then you can relax with the knowledge that your system has been working well.

If you want your air conditioning unit to stay in good condition for many years, you need to take care of it properly. Doing so can extend the lifespan of your unit so that you can continue using it for many years to come. Just follow a few common sense rules to keep your cooling system running correctly and avoid unnecessary damage to it. Doing so should allow you to use your AC system for many years.

"Jason was very professional and knowledgeable. He gave a summary of everything he did and how our furnace and AC are performing based on their age. Fortunately, we had a good check up and he didn't try to sell us any replacement parts that we didn't need. Highly recommend!"
